Melbourne dumpling fans won't have to wait much longer to try Din Tai Fung's trademark parcels of soupy xiao long bao. The Taiwanese chain will open its first Melbourne eatery in the Emporium development mid-year.

The Melbourne restaurant will be the chain's largest Australian location, and is the first outpost outside NSW, where it has seven outlets.

Din Tai Fung Emporium will occupy an entire floor above the CBD shopping centre's Cafe Court and include a glass-enclosed dumpling-making area, where diners can watch dumpling masters at work.

There will be seating for 235 and a separate external lift to allow direct access from street level.

As well as the chain's signature xiao long bao dumplings, the instagramable rainbow dumpling gems will be appearing on the Melbourne menu.

Xiao long bao slurpers will be spoilt for choice, with another Sydney import, New Shanghai, already open at the shopping centre. Hong Kong's Michelin-starred Tim Ho Wan is also planning a venue in Chinatown.

Din Tai Fung Emporium will open daily for lunch and dinner and is slated to open in June 2015.
