Dire news for daredevils: Dining in the Sky cancelled

Jane Holroyd

Daredevil diners who were to be suspended by crane above Sydney will have to look elsewhere for their thrills with news the Australian premiere of Dining in the Sky has been cancelled.

Events in the Sky CEO Simon Laxton said he and his partners had been forced to cancel the three-day program after a major sponsor pulled the plug late last week.

Laxton said that more than half of available tickets had sold for the series of aerial lunches, cocktail parties and lavish dinners that were to be held above Moore Park from October 17 to October 19. He stressed the event, which has so far been held in 40 cities around the world, had not been cancelled because of safety reasons.

Despite Australia having among the "toughest" safety standards in the world, Mr Laxton said the company had been given the green light to go ahead. "To be honest I'm in shock," he said today. "It's a massive financial hit for us." He said he hoped the event could be held in Sydney and in Melbourne in the near future.

Mr Laxton said all those who had purchased tickets to the Good Food Month event would be contacted.
