A panel of food industry heavyweights will join environmental not-for-profit Sustainable Table for an evening of lively debate about the future of Australian farming, with designs on reinventing farming as "the new rock'n'roll of the food world".

The panel is made up of TV gardener Costa Georgiadis (Gardening Australia), lawyer-turned-winemaker Matt Fowles (Fowles Wine), Sylvia Collett (Bass Coast Farm), Matt and Lentil from Grown and Gathered, and Associate Professor Jane Dixon, senior fellow at the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health.

Sustainable Table general manager Cassie Duncan says: "We have a great food culture in Australia, yet there is often a real gap in people's understanding of how food is grown and arrives on the plate."

The event is for anyone who might be considering a tree-change, is keen to grow their own food or to better understand the issues surrounding farming in Australia. Tickets, $25, include a glass of wine and light catering from Matt Wilkinson's Jack Horner.

Let's Make Farming the New Rock'n'Roll; Thursday, July 30, 6.30pm–8.30pm. No Vacancy QV, 34-40 Jane Bell Lane, Melbourne, sustainabletable.org.au
