Flinders Street Station bar Arbory on track

Hilary McNevin and Cathy Gowdie

Details are emerging about the food we can expect when 120 metres of the disused Sandridge railway line at Flinders Street Station becomes a new dining and drinking destination called Arbory.

Nicholas Bennett, most recently of Trocadero and Fatto at Hamer Hall, is heading the kitchen and has written a menu with "a contemporary European influence, but we've balanced it out with some casual dishes like burgers and sandwiches. Our audience will be very broad in a venue like this, with tourists, locals and people who work in the city."

Dishes include chorizo corndogs with jalapeno mayonnaise, white anchovies with pickled green chillies, and raw seasonal vegetables with lemon-scented yoghurt. The drinks list will feature two whites and one red wine on tap with up to 12 beers - also on tap - and a short wine list by sommelier-wine consultant Raul Moreno Yague.

The teams behind the venture are HQ hospitality group and Metro Trains. The venue's design has taken its extraordinary length into account, creating different spaces, some focused on dining and others on having a drink.

Arbory will open daily from 11am to 1am and aims to be operating by early spring.
