Ben Sweeten is about to open a Mexican cantina in Chippendale.
There's no shortage of food stars looking to shine on Sydney's Broadway in 2015. But the feel good story on the Chippendale strip isn't the impending arrival of English celebrity chef Jason Atherton, or breakout restaurants from the alumni at Noma and Momofuku Seiobo.
Tucked away in our Christmas stocking is yet another venue, which will open on Broadway in March, featuring an ensemble of local talent including bar tsar Fraser Short and the king of café cool, Ben Sweeten. And the venue's backer? The Jesuit religious order, says Sweeten, who has already started training staff for the launch.
Fraser Short has lent his experience and helped drive the project, which will also include a Mexican cantina. Down the track there are plans to offer work and training for the long-term unemployed and young offenders, with profits from the venue helping to fund an orphanage in Thailand. If it kicks goals, there are plans to open more. Good Food hears the only hitch so far has been the moniker. There was talk of naming it The Pilgrim, but venues in Ashfield and Cronulla already use it.
