Straighten those little fingers and pour some champagne. High tea is a splendid way to spend an afternoon. Don't fight the pomp and ceremony - embrace it.

Vincent, Woollahra's romantic French bistro, started cutting the crusts on Sunday afternoons in June. There's a formidable assortment of next-tier cakes and scones to enjoy with a glass of champagne in the cosy lounge attached to the Hughenden boutique hotel.

The Palace Tea Room at the Queen Victoria Building has 29 teas to choose from to accompany its petit pastries. It's open all weekend, as is The Langham which offers one of the most timeless afternoon teas in the city. There's no cucumber sandwiches at this old world hotel in The Rocks, but there is roast beef with Pommery mustard and cornichons on grain bread and Laurent-Perrier champagne.
