In now: The harbingers of the Australian garlic season are the small, fresh bulbs available now. The cloves are juicy, sticky and being uncured, not for storing.

Not for long: Broad beans are at their peak. Most pods will need double shelling to remove the mealy pale green skin.

Best buy: Can't go past the Cavendish bananas. Eat blitzed in smoothies, sliced on cereal, smashed on toast, or frozen then whizzed with lime juice and maple syrup into "ice-cream".

In the vegie patch: Watch out for citrus leaf miner attack on the new foliage of kaffir lime. Spray with Eco-oil or pestoil.
