The crowds in Richmond this winter will be forming for more than the 'G'. Gelato Messina's second Melbourne outlet is slated to open May 27, on the corner of Swan and Green streets, next to the Dimmeys redevelopment.

Much like the Melbourne Messina original in Smith Street, Fitzroy, the Richmond outlet will feature a window to the churning kitchen and offer Messina's full range of 40 flavours, plus five specials each week, and sophisticated ice-cream cakes, like the ball-shaped black forest.

The new Richmond site is smaller than Fitzroy, so baked additions, like the apple pies that go into apple gelato for Messina's apple pie flavour, will come over from Fitzroy. With this model, "we could open a couple more smaller stores," says Messina's co-founder and director Declan Lee, but no other sites have been confirmed.
