Fitzroy's grungy Gertrude Street, one of Melbourne's hippest and well-subscribed restaurant strips, will be lit up for for 10 nights in July.

Check out the 40 illuminated artworks projected onto selected buildings and trees during the annual Gertrude Street Projection Festival.

The transcience-themed artworks are scattered along the length of the street. Download the free app and be your own tour guide. There are plenty of dining options along the way, here are some of our picks.

- Warm up in Andrew McConnell's Builders' Arms hotel with the bistro's daily rotating rotisserie menu, perhaps slow-cooked lamb shoulder with carrot puree and currants?

- Alternatively, go Spanish at Casa Ciuccio and Anada.

Or head around the corner to Smith Street, and bar hop your way through our foodies' guide to Collingwood.
