Harajuku heads south

Natascha Mirosch

We've got used to Sydney and Melbourne restaurateurs coming up here and setting up second venues (and very welcome they are too), but for once, we're exporting our talent across the border, with popular Brisbane gyoza restaurant Harajuku Gyoza set to open an outlet in Sydney.

"Sydney finally has the go-ahead. We have our approvals and our location and we're just waiting on some building works to be completed before we begin our fit out," says co-owner Steve Minon.

The restaurant will be in Bayswater Road in Kings Cross, two doors up from Hugos in The Hampton Building.

"We feel pretty confident about moving into the Sydney market thanks to the reaction we've had to Harajuku Gyoza in Brisbane," he says.

"We have had a lot of people from southern states eat at the restaurant who have told us we would have a market in Sydney or Melbourne if we wanted to go there."

Harajuku Gyoza, whose menu was developed in consultation with Ryan Squire of Brisbane's three-hat Esquire, is expected to open in Sydney on August 1.
