Hawker recently swung open the doors in Sydney, but its owners are already sizing up a possible sister restaurant in Melbourne.

"If it works we'll consider it," says Hawker co-owner Julian Lee, who already has a foot in both cities with his Malaysian-Indian Mamak restaurants.

Early to the street-food craze with Mamak, satays and chicken curry don't feature at Hawker, which focuses on Malaysian-Chinese.

Not that its menu fixes its gaze exclusively on the usual suspects. Grilled stingray with a tangy and spicy dipping sauce, "starchy" omelette with oysters and deep-fried durian fritters were all developed for the menu at the 100-seat Sussex Street eatery.

"We were keen to show another side of the Malaysian cuisine," Lee says.
