The party is nearly over for the red terrace in Rozelle where chefs and home cooks have mingled and shopped for more than 18 years.

Herbie's Spices is calling time at its Darling Street digs at the end of March. Spice guru Ian "Herbie" Hemphill has sourced spices from around the globe and educated a generation of Sydney cooks from the site, his Australian ingredients currently getting a workout at Noma Australia.

The good news for those who still want a little spice in their lives is that Herbie's has done a deal to sell from its neighbour, The Essential Ingredient, from April.

"It's taking up the space alongside their cheese section and they'll pretty much stock the whole range," Hemphill says.

The spice man and his wife Liz want to spend more time travelling to the source of their products and in their spice facility on the Central Coast.

"We now stock about 300 specialty stores and find people who only live about five kilometres away from our current location still order spices online, so we'll be busy growing the business," he says "But it is a big move. For the first seven years we lived above the shop."
