In season now

Asparagus season is starting, but shop carefully; imports lurk.

At its best

Parsnips are worth celebrating. Roast chunks of parsnip and pear and toss on a salad of baby spinach and shredded radicchio. Shredded duck confit is a great addition, but roast chook isn't bad, either.

Best buy

The overlap between the strawberry season in Queensland and that in Western Australia usually brings bargains. Shop by smell.
