On the hunt: Seek out Australian asparagus rather than the imported variety. Photo: Jennifer Soo
In season now
Asparagus season is starting, but shop carefully; imports lurk.
At its best
Parsnips are worth celebrating. Roast chunks of parsnip and pear and toss on a salad of baby spinach and shredded radicchio. Shredded duck confit is a great addition, but roast chook isn't bad, either.
The overlap between the strawberry season in Queensland and that in Western Australia usually brings bargains. Shop by smell.
In the vegie patch
Pests like an orderly plot: plant nasturtiums, pot marigolds, chives, alyssum and violas among and around vegetables to confuse pests and provide edible flowers for salads.
