Is Melbourne the banh mi capital of the world? Or just home to the most photogenic pork rolls? A British company has crunched the hashtags to map global Instagram food capitals, with Melbourne taking top spot for Vietnamese baguette posts.

The stats show Sydney's fondness for soup dumplings, with the Harbour City rounding out the world's xiao long bao top five. It seems the city's dumpling obsession knows no geographical bounds. Social media savvy Sydneysiders also enjoy Polish dumplings, with the city coming in at second place for pierogi posts, behind the Polish capital of Warsaw.

The CEWE Photoworld data study looked at Instagram posts between March 10 and 18. The interactive used location-based data to track and map 18 popular food hashtags on the photo sharing app.

After last week's #burgerwars grilling, it turns out Australia can't lay claim to being the burger king of the world. London edged out US cities Los Angeles (birthplace of the much-'grammed In-N-Out burger) and New York City to take the title, with Melbourne sneaking into the top five.

Plenty of cities have jumped on the Americana bandwagon, with slow-cooked pulled pork proving popular. Melbourne and Sydney both made the top five list for this dish, behind London and New York City.

In a boost for global bacon emoji demands, Melbourne and Sydney have featured on the bacon top five, behind New York City, London and LA.

Taking the hashtag map as a glimpse of global food trends, it's clear that Australians have moved on from the macaron craze, with a mere 0.8 and 0.9 per cent of the tags tracked to Sydney and Melbourne respectively. Good Food is betting the missing #doughnut figures would be another matter.

The world's jerk chicken hot spots could come as a surprise. New York City neighbourhood Queens and London edged out the spice rub's birthplace of Kingston, Jamaica.

However some national dishes still don't translate beyond international borders. German street food favourite currywurst (sausage slices slathered in a spiced tomato-based sauce) failed to feature in the top 5 outside of its homeland. And despite poutine's dude food credentials (fries smothered with gravy and cheese), the top five cities were all within Canada.

We'd like to see how our beloved #vegemite or national cafe breakfast #smashedavo fare overseas.
