Here's the thing: beer tastes better when it's not ridiculously cold. A warmer serving temperature allows the beer's flavour and aroma to shine a little more. All good in chilly England where room temperature Boddingtons flows like water but this is Australia and we want our beer cold, by Jove!

Japanese brewery Asahi knows this and has opened the Asahi Super Dry Extra Cold Bar on Bligh Street in Sydney's CBD (just near Frankie's Pizza). From Friday, October 24, the company will be serving its Super Dry ($8.50) and Super Dry Black ($9) beers at sub-zero temperatures. Perfect for a six o'clock swill on a sweltering day.

"By chilling the beer to -2 degrees, the beer head maintains its high-bubble density for longer," says Asahi's marketing manager, Michael Vousden. "This creates a smoother texture and ultimately makes the beer more refreshing."

Vousden says there's eight Asahi Extra Cold bars in Japan and one in Korea that operate as pop-ups over the summer. This is the first in Australia.

There's bar snacks including oysters with red onion mignonette ($32 for 12), popcorn shrimp ($11), prawn and herb gyoza ($12) and char-grilled beef skewers with chimichurri ($12).

Vousden expects a steady flow of punters as the summer switches into gear and we have to agree - even the barmiest of the English army couldn't resist a zero-degree beer on a 40-degree day.

37 Bligh Street, Sydney. The Asahi Super Dry Extra Cold Bar is open through to January 23, 2015.
