Social media was saturated with glossy gateau images following the launch of Bibelot (pronounced bib-loh), a European-inspired dessert boutique brought to you by – and next door to – Chez Dré in South Melbourne.

The opulent treats formerly displayed at the cafe have moved to a seven-metre, marble-and-glass counter at Bibelot, joining a wider selection of petits gateaux, chocolates, macarons and biscuits so faultlessly crafted it's almost a shame to eat them. Almost.

Good things come in small packages here, with packaging as aesthetically pleasing as the sweets within. Breathe Architecture designed the elongated space where emerald, velvet upholstery completes the lavish look and seats 24.

An Art Deco-inspired mosaic dominates the Coventry Street frontage behind an ice-cream bar, the latter complete with six flavours of sorbetti and 10 of gelati, as well as chocolate – milk and dark – on tap.

There's also a "library" dedicated to hard-to-find patisserie coffee table books and shelving stocked with pimped-up chocolate bars, local honey, specialty tea and coffee and more.

Savoury will be presented alongside sweet come June when high tea bookings are accepted Thursday to Sunday.

Open daily, 10am-late
