Moorabbin's industrial area is the unexpected but logical location for American barbecue canteen Big Pig Little Pig. Logical? Front-of-house professionals Christy Crawford and Eamonn James and Australian-born but US-raised pitmaster Lincoln Davies were searching for an inner-city warehouse when Moorabbin came up on their radar.

Reasonable rent, room to move and smoke meats and a family-centric catchment area combined to seal the deal.

"We wanted a warehouse but we didn't want any neighbours who we could potentially annoy with smoke or noise," says Crawford. The former office supply warehouse now sports indoor and outdoor dining spaces, decked out with Astroturf, lots of timber, exposed brick and concrete – and the word BEER shining bright behind the bar.

The menu is what we've come to expect when the low-and-slow barbecue theme is pushed. Beef brisket, pork spare ribs, chicken and smoked sausages are served by weight or as shared tasting platters. There are sides of potato salad and coleslaw and snacks of fried chicken wings and house-made pickles. Eight rotating beers on tap feature beside a short list of wines from here and Europe, as well as a choice of cocktails, by the glass or the litre.

Open Mon to Fri 5pm-late; Sat noon-10pm; Sun noon-4pm.
