As the lyrics of that great Acca Dacca parody go: It's a long way to the shops if you want a sausage roll. And for fans of Bourke Street Bakery's signature pork and fennel sausage rolls, a trip from the western suburbs to its Surry Hills store would be quite a hike indeed.

No longer. Bourke Street Bakery opened its first Parramatta outlet, overlooking the Westfield end of Centenary Square (formerly Church Street Mall), last week.

The shop will be the eighth Sydney outlet for founders Paul Allam and David McGuinness, who opened their first corner bakery together in 2004.

"We've had a lot of feedback on social media from ... our Parramatta people demanding it," Allam says. "We're just doing what the customer says and that's what we've always done really."

Fitted out in rustic browns, coppers and timbers, the combined bakery-cafe seats up to 40 diners, offering an all-day menu of sandwiches, quiches, soups and salads alongside Single Origin coffees.

Most of the pastries – including croissants, tarts, pies and, yes, those sausage rolls – will be made on site however the artisan sourdough will be shipped in from the chain's new "super facility" in Banksmeadow. The tomato sauce, chai and orange juice will also be Bourke Street's own.

"We're pretty serious about making everything we provide and sell," Allam says.

But don't get too comfortable just yet. As part of a council site earmarked for redevelopment, the shop is likely to undergo a rebuild next year.

A ninth outlet is also planned for Barangaroo in October.

Where to after that?

"If anyone wants to tell us they're more than welcome," Allam says.
