Ever heard of "Brisbane Square"? Apparently it's the building that houses the Brisbane City Council offices in Reddacliff Place in the CBD.
Apart from the Jan Power's City Farmers' Markets on a Wednesday, there's never been much to draw food lovers there, but things have improved with the quiet opening earlier this month of a foursome of new venues around the building: Communal Bar & Eat House, Cafe Brisbane, Meat & Eat and Chow Down.
Communal Bar & Eat House, which seats 200, is inspired by "gastro-pubs" and as its namesake suggests features communal-style dining at shared tables. There's also a cocktail bar with 20 cocktails and eight cocktail jug specialities, as well as a top-shelf offering of speciality beers, ciders and wines. On top of burgers and wood-fired pizza, food offerings include the expected share plates and dishes from the grill.
Cafe Brisbane is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with a menu showcasing Queensland produce, while Meat & Eat comes with a "Bourbon Street meets Hamptons" decor and features breakfast and take-away speciality sandwiches of slow-cooked meats from the same owners as The Cutting Board in George Street.
Chow Down meanwhile has street art adorning the walls and pays tribute to a range of different Asian street food cuisines, under the former chef of Fusion 54 in Fortitude Valley. Dishes include dumplings, sashimi, Asian-style salad and noodles plus a signature XO crab fried rice.
