The long, burgerless stretch that is Peel Street is now, blessedly, home to Burger Buzz, saving West Melburnians the trek through the Queen Vic Markets for their dude-food fix.

The second outlet in a nascent chain (there's an outlet at 333 Sydney Road and another set to open in Preston by the end of January), Burger Buzz's point of difference is keeping it simple, in both the food and the fitout.

Serving no-nonsense meat sandwiches, Buzz will appeal to anyone who's had a literal gutful of brioche. Their flagship's the Burger Off, with its handmade 150g chuck-and-brisket patty, lettuce, tomato and some American cheddar wedged in a sesame bun.

The Philly Cheese Steak has finally arrived south, so diners looking for rump steak, peppers, pickles, mayo, hot sauce and three kinds of cheese will be both pleased and a touch bilious.

Ten variations on the meat/bun theme are also playing, the most daunting of which features three beef patties, triple cheese, bacon, egg, beetroot – and onion rings for good measure.

Vegetarians, however, are welcomed with open arms. Look for the Veg Out Burger, with its house-made sweet potato, pumpkin and red onion patty, dressed with cheese and tzatziki.

Beer is on the way, which will go nicely with the punk on the stereo, the Astroturf under your feet – and the burger down your front.
