It seems we can't get enough of what the Hutong Group is putting down. The team behind the Hutong dumpling dens in the CBD and Prahran, plus eight other hospitality outlets including Man Tong Kitchen at Crown and China Red, has just opened East.

Located on the ground floor of the new Sheraton Melbourne Hotel at the Parliament end of the CBD, East is "a modern take on Chinese food that extends beyond what diners traditionally expect of Chinese cuisine," says Hutong Group's food and beverage director Eric Chew.

Describing itself a "contemporary wine bar and Chinese tapas restaurant", East aim to tap into our love of share plates, serving authentic Chinese dishes quickly and in a casual setting.

Expect slow-cooked pork ribs, roti rolls with steamed chicken and Szechuan chilli sauce, fried potato balls with spicy sauce and, naturally, Hutong's signature xiao long bao.

The interior, designed by Richmond-based studio Hecker Guthrie, is dressed with jade tiles, polished concrete and steel framing and there's banquette and bench seating for 55.

East is open daily for lunch and dinner at 25 Little Collins Street, Melbourne, 9650 8838.
