Disheartened by the shortage of decent cafes in Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs, local lads Leor Haimes (Huff Bagelry, Carnegie) and chef Ashley Tirosh (ex De Clieu, Fitzroy, and Stovetop, Carlton) decided to have a crack themselves, opening District Brewer last month.

"I got sick of having to cross town for good cafes, so I thought: why not bring the northside vibes to this area?" says Haimes.

The seven-day operation is already kicking goals with dishes like chocolatey black forest bircher with cherry labna , and duck rillettes on grilled pumpkin brioche.
