In what might have had more anticipation surrounding it than a new Star Wars film, Doughboys Doughnuts has finally started selling delicious glazed goods from its own store in the Melbourne CBD.

Doughboys flung open the doors to its Studio Esteta-designed Bourke Street cafe on Christmas Eve, seven months after founder Will McKenzie announced his cult doughnuts would have a permanent home, instead of popping up and sharing spaces across Melbourne. The news attracted more than 900 "likes" on Doughboys' Instagram and a tsunami of comments, mostly centred around themes of "YES!", "FINALLY!!" and "OMG!!!"

It's a gorgeous, high-ceilinged shop with custom-made pendants, handsome timbers and smart tiles. Cups and doughnut plates have been handmade by Bakeware ceramics out of Brunswick and Small Batch Roasting Co is supplying coffee for drinking and dunking.

Doughboys started rolling in 2013 and quickly became a hit for its doughnuts made with organic flour, fried in rice bran oil and dipped in natural flavours. 'Nut creations have included the "Double D", coated in dark cocoa icing, crunchy peanut butter icing, roasted nuts and chunky pieces of chocolate; the "Gimmie S'more" with dark chocolate ganache, crumbled handmade graham crakers and torched marshmallow; and the "Key Lime Pie" - lime curd-filled doughnut with toasted meringue and lime-spiked pie crumbs.

Doughboys Doughnuts will reopen January 4.
