If you hear the name Ebenezer and think Scrooge, think again. Black Rock's newest cafe gets its name from owner Duncan Thomson's grandfather rather than Dickens' famously bitter miser in A Christmas Carol.

Thomson, a former hotel food and beverage manager, has installed Ebenezer Coffee and Wine Bar where Fresco House and Flowers was for 24 years. He's gutted the place and, with help from Collingwood-based interior designers Eades & Bergman, created a timeless space using loads of copper, dark wood and brass, "materials that will age well over time".

Harris Ryan, who worked at Circa under Jake Nicolson and Pei Modern with Matt Germanchis, is in charge of the kitchen, with a menu that moves from breakfast to dinner turning over seasonal ingredients in dishes such as zucchini and quinoa fritters, smoked trout and green bean salad and an evening grazing menu dotted with things like whipped cod's roe with potato and a changing charcuterie plate. The drinks list features Victorian wines and Seven Seeds coffee.

Thomson hopes the 60-seater will become a "place for breakfast, a coffee, for a quiet lunch or for a glass of wine and snack in the evening".
