When long-time Richmond locals Richard Konarik, Scott Meadows and Haydn Barwell got together over a game of lawn bowls last year, the conversation turned to food, provenance and the lack of consumer choice in their inner-city neighbourhood.

Lamenting "the dominance of the big supermarket chains", the trio decided to open a locally owned alternative, aimed at promoting small Australian producers.

Their shop, Fredericks Richmond, opened in October and stocks a range of locally sourced fresh produce, dairy and meat, including Apostle Whey cheeses, St David Dairy milk and bread from Dench and Convent Bakery.

Open Mon-Thurs 9am-8pm; Fri 9am-9pm; Sat 7am-9pm; Sun 7am-7pm.
