Just Open: Golden Duck, Eastland, Ringwood

It's the goose that laid the golden duck at Ringwood's recently revamped Eastland complex (channelling its inner Dubai with futuristic $655 million reno) as the China Bar Group opens Golden Duck on the edge of Town Square – also home to Jimmy Grants and Huxtaburger.

Guangzhou-native chefs MenSheng Xiang and Min Chen are in residence with a glossy menu focused on Canto classics – yum cha by day and a Peking duck push at night.

It's not just any Peking duck: manuka honey, cloves, five-spice and shao hsing wine marinate a lacquered whole duck carved tableside ready for a pancake wrapping – served with bonus duck and prawn-filled dumplings.

Trolley service runs all day; waiters wheel around shumai with a spicy Sichuan pepper kick, tri-colour prawn dumplings (wrappers stained with red rice flour and squid ink), and sweet steamed buns filled with custard bright yellow from duck eggs.

There's an a la carte menu of larger dishes alongside unwritten secret menu items – hot tip: ask for the prawn-stuffed, noodle-wrapped chinese doughnuts.

Given that the venue is technically part of a shopping complex they've done well with the Hong Kong-luxe vibe: red velvet booths, starched white tablecloths and a small army of efficient chefs wrapping dim sum behind a glass partition set the scene.

If that's not enough incentive to head east then a speciality menu of longevity-inducing, immunity-boosting, detoxifying teas should seal the deal.
