Did you know that Spanish roosters don't cock-a-doodle-doo, they kiki riki?
Those Spanish roosters have lent their morning call to a new Latin street food concept in Smith Street. The tiny shopfront, handpainted in energetic colours, is geared for the takeaway crowd but can squish five inside and 10 out.
A blackboard menu offers tacos, quesadillas and burritos, but a different Latin cuisine will feature every couple of months, according to Nicholas Welch, a liquor distributor with a decade of hospitality experience who opened Kikiriki with Victor Diaz (a Mexican crafts importer) and Rohit Grewal (who owns a couple of Mexican restaurants in the suburbs).
A door disguised as a pantry shelf leads to candlelit Bar Cortez, with comfortable, green Acapulco-inspired stools, traditional fruit basket light fittings and a Day of the Dead-style altar.
There's also a sizeable covered courtyard, complete with cacti and festoon lights. The feature neon arrives soon and translated from Spanish reads, "God forgives everything but bad cocktails".
With a bar loaded with beers and spirits from Mexico and South America, as well as cocktails such as the Brazilian Drum (Cachaca, Crusoe spiced rum, lime juice and cinnamon sugar), there's no need to beg forgiveness.
Kiririki is open daily noon-3pm and 5pm-11pm; Bar Cortez is open Thursday-Monday 5-11pm.
