Just Open: Melbourne's longest bar, Arbory, Flinders Street Station

The Flinders Street terminus for the Sandridge railway line, which has seen little action since it was decommissioned in 1987, reopened on Saturday as Arbory, Melbourne's longest outdoor bar and eatery.

The giant project runs the length of a city block and is the work of HQ Hospitality Group and Metro Trains, which worked with architects Jackson Clements Burrow & Associates to reimagine the strip as a 120-metre outdoor drinking and dining space.

Where passengers from Port Melbourne once alighted, you'll now find multiple illuminated shipping containers housing two bars pouring local wines and the likes of Brooklyn lager and Stone and Wood brews from the dozen taps.

They've recruited chef Nicholas Bennett from Trocadero (now Fatto) across the river, to produce a broad menu of European-style bar snacks, double cheeseburgers, salted caramel sundaes and prawn and clam spaghetti for a guaranteed mixed-bag audience.

Arbory is open from 7.30am-late daily, and yes, they do have giant umbrellas to keep things dry. We may aspire to Sydney-style waterfront dining, but this is still Melbourne.
