Down a Malvern side street, buttercup yellow stools in the slanted sunlight signal Paris-trained pastry chef Alice Wright's Millstone, a cafe with an atmosphere as light, airy and luxurious as her fresh-baked pain au chocolate.

Wright makes 120 intricate cakes a day across a rotating range, including St Honore with gianduja chantilly and raspberry cremeux, ginger creme brulee and Snickers tart, with salted peanut nougat and chocolate ganache.

While these sweet wonders are the drawcard, the savoury lunch offerings are a suite of uncomplicated quality – two proteins, such as slow-roasted pork belly with pears or lamb shoulder with labne and pomegranate – and three vegetable sides, like roasted baby carrots with honey and hazelnuts, as well as baguettes with simple, stylish fillings.
