Pork bun enthusiasts, get ready.

New Shanghai is expanding its sizzling pork bun empire with its first Sydney CBD restaurant in Westfield Sydney this month.

The owner of the family-run traditional Chinese restaurant, John Chen, says he has long been looking to expand into Sydney's CBD, but had only found the perfect location recently.

"We have a CBD store in Brisbane and Melbourne but we don't have a Sydney CBD store, so it's been a long time coming," he says.

The new menu at the CBD eatery will showcase seasonal chef specials while the interior will be inspired by the 1920/30s Shanghai-French culture with an outside patio and bar as a waiting area for customers.

"All our restaurants in Sydney are different," Chen says. "It will be similar to Chatswood Chase but will have some chef specials for that particular restaurant, and the whole design is different."

The chain is known for its cult favourite, the pan-fried pork bun, consisting of a fluffy dough, lightly charred on the bottom and encasing a tender pork filling.

Other favourites include xiao long bao, prawn wontons tossed in chilli oil, peanut and sesame sauce, crispy shell prawns with a sweet Shanghai sauce, an array of dumplings and traditional Shanghai dishes.

The CBD eatery will be fully licensed and feature a food and wine-pairing menu, which matches dishes with hand-picked wines from Glenn Caldwell at Robert Oatley Wines.
