How do you like your corn smut? If it's on a vegetarian taco, then you're in good hands at Playa Takeria, a new restaurant and bar in Darlinghurst with a focus on Mexican food.
Corn smut is a black fungus that grows directly on the cob of the corn. It's a delicacy in Mexico where it also known as huitlacoche or Mexican truffle.
At Playa Takeria it's served in a flour tortilla with zucchini, corn, sour cream, parmesan cheese, ancho chilli and chipotle ($6).
"The inspiration behind Playa Takeria lies in Mexico's vibrant taquerias and ... Playa del Carmen, a sandy piece of paradise along the country's Caribbean coastline," Playa's owner, Ricardo ACastillo, says.
The taco-and-tostadita-heavy menu also lists unsmutty items such as the "salmita nopalitos" salad with cactus, lettuce, tomato, queso fresco (fresh cheese) and coriander ($13).
The "taco don pastor" ($5) features marinated pork cooked on a "trompo" in a similar fashion to the Greek gyro.
Take-away and delivery options are available so you can order a taco lunch directly to the office.
Playa Takeria also boasts an impressive list of cocktails, along with a selection of tequila and mezcal for anyone after a bit of agave to wash things down.
