Sweet, petite and only around for a short time, Pop Up Scroll is the latest venture from husband-and-wife team Julian Chew and Tammy Chen, who previously owned Ivanhoe's Lip Cafe.

Housed in a former Chinese herbalist and offering "simple, sentimental baking and great coffee", their boutique Smith Street bakery is wholly devoted to the swirly joys of the sweet scroll, but the short lease means they'll be moving on (to another, bigger project nearby) come May.

Chew apprenticed under Matt Moran at Aria before stints at Loafer Bread and Da Noi and readily admits that pastry is his "thing". He makes six flavour combos including cherry and pistachio, apple and frangipane and their popular "original", flavoured with cinnamon and cream cheese. You'll find Coffee Supreme coffee and affogatos, too.
