When the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation scrapped Boroondara council's historic "dry area" restrictions, it opened the way for more bars and licensed restaurants in the area.

Enter Prohibition Food & Wine in an old Camberwell bank. Wayne and Kirsty Stoll, who also own and operate Prahran's Mount Erica Hotel, have renovated the interior, now rich with dark timber, marble, exposed brick and brown leather.

Leading the kitchen is chef Matt Barlow, who's cooked at South Yarra's Two Birds One Stone, Fatto in Hamer Hall and Cecconi's in the city.

His flexible menu is designed for both snacking (garlic confit doughnuts, soft-shell crab in a brioche bun) and dining (char-grilled Flinders Island lamb chops, baby beetroot salad with toasted walnuts, sorrel, and Meredith feta).

Manager John van den Berg has put together a wine list that balances familiar and boutique labels.

Open Tue-Sun noon-11pm.
