We've got watering holes underground and on rooftops, but now Brisbane has a new "sky bar". While Sazerac which opened on Wednesday on the 30th floor of the Four Points by Sheraton bills itself as the city's first sky bar, those of a certain age will remember Images, the popular bar-nightclub on the top floor of the SGIO building in Turbot Street. In its '80s heyday, the club boasted a revolutionary revolving dancefloor.
With sweeping views of the city and the Story Bridge, Sazerac takes its name from the oldest known American cocktail, invented by the Amedie Peychaud, owner of a New Orleans apothecary in 1838 using his own Peychaud's bitters recipe and French brandy.
Today, absinthe is also an essential ingredient in a Sazerac, and it's this recipe that the bar follows for its signature Sazerac. The cocktail list ranges from a traditional mint julep to a Golden Ticket – chilled Johnnie Walker Gold and Mozart Black, served over an ice sphere with shaved dark chocolate.
There are also whiskies from around the world, an extensive list of Australian and New Zealand wines and a selection of beers.
In charge of libations are Melburnian Casey Hurst and Justin Greenway, who was most recently at Stingray at the QT on the Gold Coast. Food is share plate style, from cheese plates to heartier meals such as bourbon-laced barbecue pork.
Open Mon-Sat noon-11pm; Sun 2pm-6pm.
