Popular Brisbane restaurateur Brent Farrell opened a new venue on Tuesday.

Both geographically and stylistically, it's miles away from his Toowong formal diner 85 Miskin Street but Farrell says he's enjoying the new addition.

"I grew up on this side of town, so it's familiar to me, and [my partner Kylie Hawkins] always wanted to have a cafe. To be honest I wasn't sure I'd like it, but I've worked here the last couple of days and I've really enjoyed it.

"It's an open kitchen so everyone comes and has a chat, which is something I'm not used to in the restaurant."

The former Suburban space was owned by Paul McGivern who's just opened the Wolfe in East Brisbane. The Slack's Track name refers to Logan Road's old name when the busy road was a track used by settler and cattle farmer William Slack in the 1800s.

Farrell and Hawkins will be working flat-out running their two venues, at the cafe during the day, then heading across town to open 85 Miskin Street in the evenings.

Slack's menu is smart casual, Farrell says, with relishes and preserves made in-house and breakfasts such as house-smoked salmon with kipfler potatoes and bearnaise foam, and Nutella pancakes.

Lunches include slow-braised lamb. Coffee is from Toby's Estate, including their own bottled pour-overs. The couple will apply for a liquor licence and intend to expand service into the evenings.

Open Tue-Fri 6am-2.30pm; Sat 7am-2.30pm.
