Just open: Smith Street Alimentari

Behind paper that's been shrouding the window at 302 Smith Street for months, an elegant alimentari has been taking shape. An offshoot of Gorski and Jones, next door, the deli-food store has a few stools for those who can't wait until they get home to eat roast pork-stuffed panini, but the focus is on food to go.

Tall shelves display smartly boxed panettone, nine types of rice, Spanish paprika and colourful cans of Italian tomatoes. Fridges are filled with ready-to-eat lasagne, confit duck, pancetta-pea risotto and veal stock, all prepared in the open kitchen. And in the display cabinet you'll find whole roast chickens, herb-flecked salads and doorstopper sandwiches.
