Luke Mutton and Kylie Mackinlay – the duo who started Dead Man Espresso (South Melbourne) and Common Galaxia (Seddon) have finally opened their much anticipated all-day city venture, Sun Moth Canteen & Bar.

The 90-seater canteen, fronting onto Niagara Lane near Chinatown, is aimed at locals and city workers with its brief but punchy breakfast, lunch and dinner menus (the kitchen is tiny) and a bar that focuses on craft beers and ciders from the likes of Nail Brewing La Sirene Saison (six taps will rotate brews regularly) and natural wines. Lack of space also means espresso coffee has made way for filter brews.

Mutton and Mackinlay have joined forces with chef and barista Jackson Duxbury and friend Tod La Marr with each focusing on their strengths. Mackinlay will take care of administration while Mutton is overseeing the craft brews, Duxbury the wine list and La Marr – previously of Richmond's Bar Economico – has taken the lead on the cocktail list.

Chef Sebastien Nichols will focus on grains at breakfast, re-inventing some granola and muesli recipes from his time at Yarraville's Cobb Lane.

Lunch and dinner options revolve around salads (there's a kale and quinoa version with toasted almonds and spiced hummus for $10), pickled and fermented food, stews and broths.

Design-lovers will no doubt be keen to see the sleek, functional fit-out, a collaboration between Mutton's Sunkland Projects, Illogical Study and Life Space Journey and builders Fido Projects.
