The Bolt Bar has opened at the Aranda shops - a laid back local bar with plenty of character and its very own beer, the Aranda Pale Ale.

The bar has been a few months in the making and opened on September 21 with beers, Canberra wines and a pub menu that includes steak and fries and duck leg with lentils on offer.

It's the latest stage in owner Chris Dennis's transformation that's brought new life to the previously derelict Aranda shops on Bandjalong Crescent.

Dennis moved his popular coffee roasters and cafe Two Before Ten to the shops earlier this year, after its previous home in Civic's Hobart Place was redeveloped into apartments.

Since then he's been busily turning the old shopping centre, with its distinctive pitched roof, into a community hub filled with food, drink and conversation.

He even had a bit of help from Brumbies star and barista Matt Toomua.

The Two Before Ten cafe takes up one corner of the shops. The roastery is next door. Then there's the Library - a gathering place with comfortable couches, books and tables where people can take their time over the newspaper and coffee and art classes and other local events are held.

The Bolt Bar is on the far corner of the shops.
