Just Open: The Flying Bear, Kirribilli

We love a new brunch spot in Sydney almost as much as we love to admire the glittering harbour on a sunny day. It's a warm welcome then to the Flying Bear – your new waterside cafe to drop toast crumbs on the Saturday paper.

It's attached to the Sydney Flying Squadron sailing club in Kirribilli and helmed by Adam Marshall, the nice guy who also manages the Squadron's recently relaunched restaurant and bar, Foys. Elizabeth Bay locals might remember Marshall from the marina's popular Bird and Bear Cafe.

Marshall says the Flying Squadron club was crying out for something that breathed new life into its heritage and did justice to its remarkable views.

"The history and location of this building is truly special, he says. "Our inspiration was to transform the space into a harbour retreat for locals and professionals from North Sydney, which in turn would secure the ongoing viability of this unique community asset."

The Flying Bear's morning menu (available until midday) features minimum-fuss dishes like avocado toast with tomato, chilli flakes and truffle oil ($13); bircher muesli with tea-smoked figs, grated apple, toasted almonds and yoghurt ($12); and rosemary, cheddar and sundried-tomato scones ($5).

For lunch there are sandwiches such as a roast chicken number with red cabbage, caramelised onion, parsley and aioli ($13) and a handful of salads including grilled chorizo with rocket, soft-boiled egg, butter beans, parsley and mint ($16).

The Bear team are considering champagne brunches but for now there's fresh coconut juice, milkshakes, smoothies, tea and coffee.

The cafe will transform into a live music venue every Thursday night with a bonus taco menu (seafood tacos by the water on warm nights are just as good as toast by the water on sunny mornings).
