Shoppers in Marrickville can now access organic, sustainable produce straight from the source with the arrival of The Urban Farmacy, a new producers' hub on Marrickville Road.

Opened in December by farmers Cath and Hapi Fiefia, the grocer-deli is located on the site of an old Greek deli and sells a seasonal range of fresh fruits and vegetables from local suppliers.

The venture is a spin-off of the couple's Field to Feast Farm, which delivers heirloom greens from their Catherine Field acreage to restaurants across the city.

The shop's walls are lined with local wares, and labels describe where each product is from. Suppliers include Uncle Steve Olive Oil from Silverdale and Happy Fruit from Mildura, which sells a wide selection of dried goods through the store. A long deli fridge is filled with local cheeses, antipasti and cold meats.

Pre-prepared options that cater to urban dwellers are also on their way, including salads made from the shop's produce.

"[The idea is] you can come in and buy a salad, steak, loaf of bread and butter and there's your dinner," Cath says.

"What's missing in our community is the back fence. Nibber-nabbering to neighbours ... that doesn't happen now. We want to bring that back and teach people how to eat."

The Urban Farmacy will also be running "tucker and turps" nights, where producers teach patrons about their products. Next Wednesday, January 14, will feature Tony Gibson from Surry Hills deli Ruby and Rach, who will be discussing pickling and pastrami.
