Welcome to Thornbury's much-anticipated launch is set for Friday, August 14, featuring some of the city's biggest food trucks in one spot.

Melbourne's first permanent food truck venue will host a rotating schedule of the best deep-fried, greasy, sugar-laden street treats. It's all for the taking, with no waiters to judge the volume of your order.

Despite Melbourne's love for food trucks, local councils often don't permit our four-wheeled friends. Not a problem in one of the city's biggest purpose-built beer gardens. The brainchild of the Mr Burger team, who also run Fancy Hank's, Homeslice and Brunswick Mess Hall, Welcome to Thornbury is in capable, greasy hands.

The 4000-square-metre former used car yard has undergone a makeover, featuring pale timber floors and asymmetric crystal white panels. Hosting four to six food trucks, with space for more than 700 street-eaters every night, gone are the days of trudging through Melbourne's lesser-known suburbs for your favourite truckie.

Welcome to Thornbury's first weekend features Mr Burger, The Curry Truck, Lil Nom Noms, Billy Van Creamy and more.

There's no lack of drinks available to wash down your feast, with a boutique selection of beers on tap in the sheltered bar. A selection of wine, craft beers and cocktails is also on offer.

Transport is an easy matter with the 86 tram stop and Croxton train station next door. Bring the fussiest foodie you know and watch them struggle with choice.

520 High Street, Northcote, (03) 8682 1000, open daily 5pm-1am (from Friday, August 14).
