Brisbane barflies will be in mourning with the news that one of the city's best loved bar/restaurants has closed.

The Lark Food & Drink in Paddington shut its doors quietly on Sunday.

Housed in a converted 19th century cottage on Given Terrace, The Lark opened in 2007 under Perry Scott, a highly regarded international bartender, formerly of The Bowery, Lychee Lounge and London's Match Bar Group.

Scott said the closure arose from "the financial pressure of running a boutique operation" and he would take a break to "let it sink in" before considering his next move.

"After almost seven years of slinging drinks, serving food, talking trash and a whole lot of laughs it was a decision that did not come lightly," Scott said. "We threw everything into it, but over the last one and a half to two years the market has changed.

"We had our time in the sun, winning multiple awards, and have had some unbelievably talented staff who have gone through the Lark doors on to great things around the globe."

The Lark is just one of several closures this year of venues run by experienced operators, including Ortiga in Fortitude Valley and Philip Johnson's One Eleven in the CBD. Conversely there have been a rash of new bars, adding to what some believe is an already saturated market.
