Lepp changes spots

Bob Hart & Hilary McNevin

VIN Cellar in Prahran had a few golden moments - many of them with the estimable John Lepp at the stoves - before the blush finally faded from the rose and the doors closed just over a year ago with the owner citing building problems just after attaining its first Good Food Guide hat. But last month, Vin reopened with a new owner, Nina Kimpton, who bought the business from Damien Hobday. Kimpton has wisely recalled Lepp, who was executive chef at the European in the mid-noughties before filling a similar role at Middle Brighton Baths and then joining Vin four years ago. Lepp endured something of a rough patch after Vin closed, with sibling business the Argo in South Yarra also closing in April this year. He was doing little more than cooking for friends when Kimpton called. Reorganisation was inevitable and, "now there's Vin Cellar and Vin Dining", Lepp says. The Cellar "offers retail, does not take bookings, and revolves around a menu based on charcuterie and cheeses". Vin Dining will be "more intimate than it used to be, with just 30 seats and a more detailed menu", he says.
