Foxtel and the Lifestyle Channel are commissioning a local version of The River Cottage, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s popular television show about life on the farm.

This is the first international version of the series.

The show is looking for an "Aussie Hugh" to host the series, a person who will be tested for "their knowledge of food, enthusiasm for all things wild and local, and resilience in setting up a sustainable farm in the Australian countryside".

Matthew Evans would be the obvious choice, sharing Fearnley-Whittingstall’s genuine and bubbly love of the country and understated ordinary persona.

But he’s got a show. We reckon our Bryan Martin could be an off-centre contender.

Hell, he’s thrown himself so deeply into country life that he can’t always seem to find his way out of the Murrumbateman weed fields.

Fearnley-Whittingstall visits Australia for the first time when production starts early next year.

The search for the Aussie Hugh is underway.
