When McDonald's announced earlier this week it was adding mozzarella sticks to its US menu, the internet went into, well, meltdown.

The Golden Arches also announced plans to serve chorizo breakfast bowls, lobster rolls and made-to-order salads in selected stores but nothing set the internet alight like the news it will be selling three deep-fried mozzarella sticks for $US1 at its 14,000 American restaurants in 2016.

The mozzarella sticks are being trialled at McDonald's restaurants in New York.

A spokesperson for the company says there are no plans to put mozzarella sticks on the menu in Australia.

But given the excitement the new menu item has caused online, who knows? As Twitter has demonstrated yet again, one should never underestimate the appeal of molten cheese and deep-fried snacks.
