With an unrelenting wave of new restaurant openings across Sydney, the closure of a few of the city’s veterans is hardly surprising.

Potts Point stalwart Mezzaluna has joined the casualty list.

"It has closed, we are leasing it as empty possession," confirmed broker Allan Levy from Metro Commercial.

Mezzaluna opened more than 20years ago on the site of a piece of Sydney restaurant royalty, the address once home to Butlers Restaurant.

Angelo Italiani and Aldo Bertoli purchased Mezzaluna in May 2008 (for $500,000 it was reported at the time); by 2010 Italiani admitted to a tough trading environment, tweaking menus and making changes to try and "rekindle some of the flare of the past".

Levy says a few of the usual suspects of Sydney restaurant scene have already toured the site with a view to rebooting it.
