When a fire tore through the Diamant Hotel in NewActon in 2011 it reduced Parlour and the old Flint restaurant to ashes.

But now Parlour is back in business and Flint gave way to the bakery, cafe and restaurant that is A. Baker. And now it has won a design award. The Eat Drink Design awards are a celebration of architecture and design in restaurants, bars, cafes and all sorts of hospitality spots.

A. Baker was nominated in four categories and won one: Best Cafe Design. Melbourne architects DesignOffice were responsible for the A. Baker modern industrial look, which incorporates some of the charred walls from the fire with open-plan seating and low tables, and the intimate basement bar below.

David Smith from DesignOffice says the team needed to create "a robust, simple and inviting environment within the charred shell of a heritage-listed 1920s building connected to a new basement below".
