Pistachio charity dinner
Pistachio restaurant in Torrens is holding a charity dinner on Tuesday, October 21, to raise money for the Australian Cancer Research Foundation. There'll be a silent auction on the night with a signed Brumbies jumper, wines from Nick O'Leary and a cooking masterclass with owner and chef Dave Keeley and the Canberra Institute of Technology for up to 20 people. The dinner's in conjunction with Scottie Eastburn from Live Fit Live Life and Keeley says 100 per cent of the money raised will go to the foundation. There are five courses plus canapes, and the menu includes 12-hour, slow-cooked lamb shoulder with Moroccan spiced ravioli, Berkshire pork belly confit and yogurt and vanilla parfait. The matching wines include the 2013 Nick O'Leary riesling, the 2008 Lerida Estate brut rose and the 2013 Ministry Series Frontbencher shiraz. $100 a person. Tuesday, October 21. Oktoberfest
At the end of October it's all about the beer and the schnitzel. Oktoberfest 2014 is going to be at the Budawang Building in EPIC. There'll be pork knuckles, German sausages, schnitzel and gingerbread while the beer will be very German. And there'll be bands. Starts Friday, October 31 and runs all weekend. Riesling challenge
The Canberra Riesling Challenge is on this week with 494 entries from nine countries. There are two classes and the awards dinner on at the Hyatt Hotel. On Friday, October 17, there's a seminar on riesling excellence from 10am-2.30pm. $60. There's also a riesling masterclass from 2.30pm-4.30pm. $85. The awards night dinner is 6.30pm. $80 but tickets are limited. On Saturday, October 18, the doors are open for public tastings. 11am-3pm, Albert Hall. $30.

Poachers Pantry wins gold
It's always nice to see local providores win awards in other parts of the country. Poachers Pantry have taken out two gold medals at the Sydney Royal Fine Food Show, for their smoked chicken breast with tarragon and lemon and a Sicilian smoked chicken breast. Owner Susan Bruce says she entered six products and each one won a medal.

Double your churros
The San Churro chocolate store in Woden is holding a "Spanish fiesta" this week, which means a two-for-one deal on churros if you check in to the store on social media and tag a friend.
