New restaurant in Curtin
There's a new suburban eatery coming to Curtin and it's called Silver Fox Bar and Grill. It'll be in the old Delissio building on Theodore Street. The owners are Michelle Cochrane and her husband, pro BMX rider Cam White. Michelle says they're going for a modern Australian menu and a much more up-to-date look in the restaurant. "I want it to be a place that you want to go and stay and have a drink," she says. "Because we're a suburban restaurant, we're going to be doing food that you can get at home." This includes pizzas and pasta, stuffed chicken breast, rib eye steaks and prosciutto-wrapped pork tenderloin. It's the couple's first restaurant - Cam, a man of many talents, will continue BMX aerials and also has a second business. But Michelle has a restaurant pedigree of her own - her parents own Cape Cod in Dickson. She tells us that Silver Fox will be open seven days a week and will do coffee every morning with a few takeaways and then lunch and dinner from Wednesday to Sunday. They hope to open from September 22 with coffee and then lunch and dinners on September 24.

Another new cafe in Braddon
We hear the latest addition to Braddon's cafe scene is Superfine, which will be opening soon on the corner of Mort and Bunda Streets.

Italian and Sons, Mezzalira and Da Rosario come to Good Food Month
Good Food Month just got even more interesting. The Trimboli family's three Italian eateries have signed up to Canberra's own food festival which runs all through October. Every Tuesday in October, Mezzalira will serve up blackboard specials with regional dishes from the south of Italy: Sicily, Calabria and Campania. These include hand made pasta dishes, suckling pig from the wood-fired oven and crustaceans. Every Monday in October, Italian and Sons will run special dishes and wines from other regions in Italy. Monday, October 6, will be Piedmont, October 13, is Naples, Calabria and the south, October 20 is Tuscany and October 27 will feature the food of the islands, Sicily and Sardinia. And Da Rosario will be serving up Calabrian and Sicilian street food for the whole month of October. Good Food Month is Australia's largest food festival and is coming to Canberra in October. Among the events are special celebrity guest chef Frank Camorra who will cook a special dinner at Parlour Wine Room. See more at canberra.goodfoodmonth.com.

Garden path
If you're interested in food and sustainability, take a walk through the Wakefield Gardens Heritage Precinct on September 21 and explore some of Ainslie's historic sites and abundant gardens. Learn about suburban bee keeping, backyard chooks and worm farms, get a coffee and check out kids brewing their own ginger beer. It starts from the Bus Stop Park on the corner of Cowper and Cox streets in Ainslie, from 11am-3pm on Sunday, September 21. Tickets are $5 for adults but kids get in for free. The event raises money for Ainslie School. Tickets from the school on www.ainslies.act.edu.au or 6205 6322.

Cooking classes
The next couple of Canberra Environment Centre classes sound pretty interesting. This Saturday Evangeline Lam will show you how to make dairy free nut milks using coconut, cashew and almond. She will also demonstrate how to make cream cheese with cashews. It costs $20 and includes ingredients and take home samples. Saturday, September 13, from 2pm-3.30pm. And next Tuesday there's going to be a workshop on solar cooking. Cindy Steensby will show you how to make a solar cooker and how to cook with it. She'll also explain what sort of food can be cooked and how to adjust your favourite recipes for a solar cooker. Tuesday, September 16, from 6pm-8pm. Tickets are $20. Both classes are at the Canberra Environment Centre on the corner of Lawson Crescent and Lennox Crossing in Acton. Bookings on ecoaction.com.au.

Bacon and olive oil medals
Two Canberra producers have taken out medals at the Royal Melbourne Fine Food show on the weekend. Fedra Olive Grove won two medals for their olive oils - gold for their Fedra Frantoio and a bronze medal for the Jeff's Blend olive oil. And Pialligo Estate took a silver for the Pialligo Farm Dry Cured Streaky bacon and bronze for the full rasher Pialligo Farm Smoked and Dry Cured Bacon.
