Smoque comes to Woden
Southsiders can rejoice. Grant Kells has announced he's opening another Smoque restaurant – and this one's in Woden. Kells says the new Smoque will be based at the Abode Hotel on Dawes Street in the town centre. He and his team plan to be in place in October. "We're aiming for the beginning of October," he says. There will be the same menu at Smoque in Woden but it will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and will be open seven days. Kells says he's been looking to open a branch of his popular barbecue restaurant in Woden for a long time and a large number of Smoque's social media fans are from the southside. "It's all going to be family friendly and will have a beer garden," Kells says. "It's hard to find somewhere in Woden to have a drink." Look out also for the American breakfasts, which Kells says will include breakfast burritos and an array of 10 different types of waffles – including fried chicken and waffles.

Fish and chips at the Yacht Club
There's a newly refurbed fish and chippie opening at the Canberra Yacht Club in Yarralumla, which will be called Snapper. According to the Yacht Club, the shop and cafe will open in early September, serving fish and chips, glasses of wine and cups of coffee on the lakefront. Snapper's part of a new agreement between the Yacht Club and the Southern Cross Club and there are plans for live music at the cafe on Saturday afternoons in the sun.

The Fireside Festival is well under way and one of the events this weekend is Lerida Estate Winery's duck and pinot masterclass on Saturday, August 23. There'll be six courses of duck canapes matched with Lerida pinot gris and pinot noir. The masterclass will focus on what makes a great food and wine pairing. Owner Jim Lumbers will talk about the wines and wife Anne will talk about the food. The menu includes smoked duck with pumpkin and orange salad, an intriguing-sounding lacquered duck, shiitake and cucumber wrapped in rice paper and a duck green curry. Lerida Estate, Federal Highway at Lake George. It's $50 a person, bookings on 6295 6640.

Like a job?
Chris Hansen's got a number of talents – as businessman and owner of Ox Eatery in Kingston and now as web guru. He's started a website called Like a Job, which aims to match chefs, waiters, apprentices and other hospitality workers with jobs and employers in Canberra. Like a Job operates like a social network for jobs, matching jobseekers with employers based on their skills, experience and qualifications. "It's a cross between a job board, and I've modelled it on eHarmony or RSVP or Tinder," Hansen says. He said the idea for Like a Job came from watching younger staff members use apps like Facebook and Tinder to communicate quick bites of information instantly and disposably. Like a Job doesn't have long questionnaires to fill out – you do have to make a profile, but after that you browse through jobs and click "like" on the ones that take your fancy. Employers also can click "like" on your profile and if it's a match you can get in contact. "It’s about instant gratification, so you can sit in the pub and 'like a job' and I get an email [that says you liked the job]," he says. "There’s no resume writing, no cover letters, your photograph is hidden, but you don’t actually release it until you like an employer." He was also frustrated with trying to find good staff. "[Out of 10 potential interviewees] five of them wouldn’t return the call, you’d invite five to an interview and two would turn up and one would be on drugs. I thought there must be a better way," he says. The Canberra Institute of Technology is sold on the process – it's adopted Like a Job for its apprentices and hospitality students.
